It sees the bird taking a drink. Its tail moves back and forth, pushing the alligator forward. The alligator sinks under water. SNAP! The alligator strikes its prey. The alligator lifts its head up to swallow its prey, because they swallow their prey whole. That is how an alligator catches its prey.       Young alligators prey is crayfish, insects, small fish, shrimp, and crabs. When alligators get older they can eat fish, birds, snakes, turtles, muskrats, and even other alligators.           Chapter 2 Amazing FactsAlligators are capable of extraordinary things. Alligators could eat a small dog. Their nests can be 3 feet high and 6 feet across. Grass in alligators nests slowly rot. Rotting plants give off heat. The heat helps the babies grow inside the eggs. Alligator’s tongues are completely attached to the floor of their mouths. Alligators have a mirror like layer behind their retina which bounces light back onto the retina. It takes the embryos (The alligator inside the egg) 63 to 84 days to be ready to hatch. Sometimes two male alligators have a fight. Some people have seen alligators with a missing foot. The alligator probably lost that foot in a fight. A large alligator can stay underwater for more than an hour. It’s easy to tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile if you know what to look for. Crocodiles have thin, pointed snouts. Alligators have wide rounded snouts. Most crocodiles live in saltwater. Most alligators live in freshwater. When a crocodile closes its moth there is a tooth sticking out on each side. Alligators have those teeth hidden.                           Chapter 3     Alligator BasicsAlligators live in the southeastern United States and China.
